Many South Africans living in multi-dwelling properties are getting substantially higher electricity price increases than Eskom Direct and municipal customers.
Eskom Direct customers received a 12.74% average electricity price increase from 1 April 2025. The power utility also received approval to increase municipal bulk electricity fees by 11.32% from 1 July.
The actual increases applying to municipal customers will vary because municipalities can apply to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) for adjusted increases.
When doing so, they must provide a cost-of-supply study to justify their adjustments. This must prove that the tariffs they charge are related to the actual cost of providing electricity.
A MyBroadband analysis found the proposed average increases in 10 major municipalities varied from as little as 2% to 14%. These are currently being considered by Nersa.
